In 2011, the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau was considered a forbidden zone for viticulture. Yet, on a hectare of barren sand along the north bank of the Yarlung Tsangpo, our founder Tianwen Qu planted the first trial vines.

Our parcels sit in a band few vineyards on earth can reach — between 3,507 and 3,758 meters.

The variety

A red-fleshed grape bred here over years of trial, out of a field of more than sixty candidates. Its anthocyanin concentration runs six to twelve times that of fruit grown at conventional altitudes.

Under extreme environmental stress, the vine responds by ramping up its production of secondary metabolites — compounds that serve as its shield against the harsh plateau conditions. At 3,600 meters, that survival instinct translates directly into the glass: deeper color, greater structure, and a concentration of bioactive compounds now widely prized for their potential health benefits.

The vines take two gifts from this ground: soil naturally enriched with strontium and selenium, and mineral spring water drawn from a rock stratum three hundred meters beneath the vineyard, fed by glacial melt.

Above 3,500 meters, ultraviolet intensity runs three to five times that of the plains. It forms a sterilizing screen in which bacterial and viral survival falls below one percent of low-altitude levels. Pests and disease are all but absent — the same conditions under which cordyceps and fritillary grow wild here, with virtually no pesticide.

On this unforgiving plateau, nothing is taken for granted — least of all the grapes themselves. Every berry is earned, every decision measured.

Winter harvest

The valley freezes on its own. No machine is involved in making our icewine cold. The grapes are harvested only in their frozen state, at temperatures between –8°C and –12°C — typically in the deep winter nights of December and January. The ice crystals lock the water within the fruit, so what reaches the press is nothing but pure, intense concentrate. The yield rarely exceeds twenty percent.

Each vine must be stripped by hand within thirty seconds — a race against the warmth of the picker's fingers, lest a single ice crystal be lost to melting. The highland air is so pure and dry that frozen fruit simply does not spoil.

In the winery

Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, each one hand-painted with a Tibetan emblem. Select batches then mature in oak, deep within the stone cellar beneath the estate.

The equipment is unremarkable. What makes it remarkable is the fruit that fills it.

Irrigation runs through an advanced fully automated drip system, delivering water to the root by the liter rather than the hectare. Where every drop is glacial melt, that precision is not a refinement — it is the condition of farming here at all.

Above the rows stand custom hail canopies. At this altitude one storm in the wrong week can take a vintage, and the nets are what stand between a harvest and a loss.

Six ethnic groups work these rows together — Han, Tibetan, Yi, Lisu, Bai and Naxi. At the festival that opens the farming year they tie prayer flags side by side; at Wangguo, the harvest festival, the villagers walk the field boundaries in prayer, then sing and dance until dark.
汉、藏、彝、傈僳、白、纳西六个民族的员工在世界屋脊上并肩劳作。开耕节上，他们一同系起祈福经幡；望果节时，村民绕田转经祈福，载歌载舞直到日落。
Every late September the estate opens its own harvest festival to guests and neighbors alike. Our technicians teach pruning hand over hand. All of that shared work ends up in the bottle.

The vineyard shares its river with the birds that winter here. Farming with almost no pesticide is not a position we adopted for the label — it is what this altitude already allows, and what sharing a valley with these birds asks of us.
